Apple Calendar Forces Mennonite Woman to Celebrate Something Called ‘Tartan Day’

SWIFT CURRENT, SK

Area woman Erin Loewen, 29, was intrigued this week as she noticed a black dot on today’s date in her iPhone calendar.

“Funny, I don’t recall scheduling anything for today,” said Loewen. “Oh, would you look at that. It’s Tartan Day, whatever that is.”

Though she’s not of Scottish heritage and knew nothing about the holiday, Loewen was compelled by its inclusion on her Apple Calendar to celebrate the holiday.

“I’ve never heard of 90% of the holidays listed on my phone,” said Loewen. “But that’s okay. I celebrate them all.”

With no ability to delete individual holidays, Loewen is stuck celebrating St. George’s Day, National Patriots Day, Discovery Day, Orangemen’s Day and dozens of other holidays she’s never heard of before.

“Whatever happened to Christmas and Easter?” wondered Loewen. “Oh, well, my husband says I look pretty cute in a kilt anyway.”

So far Apple has not added traditional Mennonite holidays such as Hog Butchering Sunday, Conscientious Objectors Days, and, of course, Himmelfahrt.
