Unable to host any in-person book signings since his novel Once Removed was released, local author Andrew Unger has created an ingenious new invention that should solve the problem.
“People will finally start comparing me to Margaret Atwood,” said Unger, referring to the robotic book signing device invented by the famous author. “Of course, I’m a Mennonite, so I had to be a bit more frugal about the whole thing.”
While taking a walk at AD Penner Park in Steinbach, Unger happened upon a fallen branch of just the perfect length and girth to safely hold a pen at the end.
“With that stick and a bit of Duct tape and I was good to go,” said Unger, who admits his socially-distanced signing technique is still a little shaky.
“I’m sure Atwood’s got the technique down pat,” said Unger. “For now I’m just making a feeble attempt at my initials.”
The new stick has been a life-safer for Unger who until recently had been signing piles of books in the back room of McNally Robinson and making each one out to “Martha and Abe.”
