I’ve learned that there are certain issues that generate considerable controversy in Mennonite circles: corn syrup vs. Roger’s golden syrup, Swiss vs. Dutch, Winkler vs. Steinbach, hymns vs. crappy repetitive contemporary worship songs. However, the topic that seems to be most contentious is violence vs. nonviolence. Mennonites have a complicated history in this area. Although officially we are a pacifist faith there have been varying interpretations of this principle from the very beginning. Certainly our collective histories and current perspectives on this matter are complex, controversial and far from homogenous.
So, what can I say on this topic that will please everyone? I guess that’s impossible. Instead, you can take your pick.
