Mr. and Mrs. Schroeder were really excited that they somehow managed to snag a reservation at the local Mexican restaurant at the prime time of 4:30 in the afternoon.
“I can’t believe it wasn’t all booked up,” said Mrs. Schroeder. “I guess everyone else already had supper. We’re night owls, I suppose.”
When the Schroeders arrived, the place was mostly empty, and there was no one waiting at the door to greet them.
“I had to ding the bell. I guess she was on her cigarette break or something,” said Mrs. Schroeder. “I’m not sure why they’d let someone take a break during the supper hour. I’m really surprised this place isn’t packed.”
The Schroeders ordered their meal at 4:45 and were just digging into dessert at quarter after 5.
“Oba, Henry, it’s getting late,” said Mrs. Schroeder, glancing up at the wall clock. “Why don’t you ask for the cheque while I use the facilities?”
The Schroeders made it back to the farm by 5:30, which gave them time to milk the cows and hit the hay.
“Dietschlaund, I’m burning the candle at both ends it seems! No late night TV for us tonight,” said Mrs. Schroeder. “I guess we’ll have miss the 6 o’clock news, but I’m just plum tuckered out.”
Meanwhile, all the city Mennonites were just finishing up lunch at 4:30.
