NEWTON, KS
Local MCC volunteers have finally discovered why local woman, Erin Friesen, 44, of Newton, Kansas frequents their store 3 or 4 times a week.
“Every time she’s got a load of laundry to do, she’s knocking on our doors,” said thrift store manager and master denim ripper Margaret Wiens. “Then she donates a garbage bag or two of gently used clothes and takes home at least as much.”
Friesen says she discovered her aversion to laundry nearly 20 years ago when she married Jack.
“Looks like Jack’s run out of clean socks again,” said Friesen. “Time to hit the MCC store.”
Friesen has not done laundry in over a decade and with the thrift store prices, she doesn’t think it’s costing her any money.
“By the time you pay for detergent and electricity, you might as well get yourself a nice new used pair of capris,” said Friesen. “Jack’s been wearing Newton, Kansas’s cast-off underwear for decades and he’s never complained. Of course, I tell him they’re brand new. What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him.”
Friesen comes home with a half dozen laundry baskets full of used clothes each week, often her cast-offs from the week before.
“Of course I wash them all first before wearing them,” said Friesen. “I do have some standards.”
The Newton Kansas MCC Thrift Store/Laundromat is open 9:30 AM to 7:30 PM Mondays to Fridays and 9:30 to 5:30 on Saturdays.
