Tip-flation So “Out of Control” They’re Even Expecting Tips in Winkler

WINKLER, MB

Many consumers have noticed tip-flation or “tip creep” in recent years, as customers are being asked for tips in places they’ve never did before such as auto mechanics, fast food restaurants, and Winkler.

“I knew this tip-flation was getting out of control when they started expecting a tip in Winkler,” said Morden resident Joel Zacharias. “I have no problem tipping in Winnipeg or Morden, but Winkler? Oba nay!”

Residents have noticed that several Winkler establishments now prompt customers to tip 10, 15, or even 20%.

“I was shocked the first time I saw it,” said area woman Ruth Toews. “I couldn’t believe I was in Winkler. But there I was, just a block from the thrift store.  Hmph … and next thing you know they’ll probably be expecting tips there, too.”

A large group opposed to “tip-flation” met on the parking lot outside the Co-op to discuss the matter.

“We have to keep tipping out of Winkler,” said attendee Jack Redekop. “If we don’t stand up against tip-flation now, soon it’ll be in Reinfeld and Blumengart and maybe even Osterwick.”

Meanwhile, sandwich chops and dry cleaners in Winnipeg are now asking for 40 to 50% tips just for handing the product over the counter to you.
