It’s that time of year again once yet. The Oscars! Well, of course, as Mennonite we don’t watch movies, except we all know Onkel Oscar who owns a TV behind the barn out back and we sometimes get to sneak around there and watch the game yet. So we asked Onkel Oscar what he thinks are the best movies of the year. Here is his top ten list yet. Just don’t tell Pastor David.
- Altona – A romantic comedy about a sax worker and the son of a Russian Mennonite oligarch. A romance blossoms when the Russian Mennonite boy takes sax lessons. This film is NSFW. Not Safe for Wiebes.
- The Brutalist – This is a 5-hour long biopic about a famous Mennonite minister. The parishioners call him the “Brutalist” because he’s so strict with the rules about no knacking zoat on Sundays.
- A Complete Unknown – A man from Ste. Anne moves a few miles away to Steinbach, where everyone mispronounces his last name as Hiebert. He’s actually a Hebert.
- Conclave – This is a movie about Catholics, so Onkel Oscar didn’t watch it.
- Dune: Part Two – A story set in a Mennonite colony in Chihuahua during the dry season.
- Emilia Perez – Yet another story about the Mennonite colonies of northern Mexico. This one with singing. Hymns, of course.
- I’m Still Here – This is the story of a church custodian who sits patiently in a pew after church, waiting for all the men to stop chatting in the lobby so he can lock up the building.
- Nickel Boys – The first in a series of films that also includes the Thiessen Boys, the Kroeker Boys, and the Reimer Girls.
- The Substance – A film about the discovery of schmaunt fat.
- Wicked – The story of the Lutherans.
